Libereco keeps on supporting the demand to reinstate Tatsiana Shaputska immediately.

After being expelled from the Belarusian State University (BSU) in December 2009 Tatsiana Shaputska has appealed against this decision. Unfortunately she was not successful in court.

 

During her trial in spring 2010 it was questioned if she stayed away from her classes without permission when she attended an EU conference in Brussels in November 2009.

 

The deputy dean of the faculty of law admitted that the participation of a political science student  in an EU event should be considered as a great success. However, he emphasised his view that Tatsiana travelled to Brussels without permission of her university and, therefore, her reason to stay away from the lectures does not matter. Other representatives of BSU supported this point of view.

 

After the trial Tatsiana stated to be disappointed by the judge’s passiveness. “Honestly, I was hoping that Judge Yuri Shestakov would show more interest in the process”, she said. “He hardly discussed with the parties and did not ask any questions. It seemed that he knew which  decision he had to take and that is why he did not see any sense in actively taking part in the process”.

 

Unfortunately, Tatsiana is not the only politically active student who suffers from repressions by her university. We will report about further cases on this website in the near future.

Libereco keeps on supporting the demand to reinstate Tatsiana Shaputska immediately and calls for sending appeals to the Belarusian authorities in Minsk and to Belarusian embassies abroad.
