Tatjana Schaputska with Carl Bildt and Benita Ferrero-Waldner

17. December 2009 – Tatsiana Shaputzska expelled from university

Tatsiana Shaputska, press-secretary of the „Young Front“(Malady Front), was being expelled from her studies at the Belarusian State University on 3 December 2009 – obviously because of her political exertion.

Tatsiana Shaputzka was a participant of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum, a project funded by the EU for a closer connection with its eastern neighbors. There Shaputzka met with various representatives of the European Union, i.e. the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden, EU Presidency Carl Bildt and EU Commissioner on External Relations and Neighborhood Policy Mrs. Benita Ferrero-Waldner (s. picture above). This conference took place from 16 till 17 November 2009,  that is shortly before her expulsion from her studies at the Law Faculty of the Belarusian State University in Minsk.

According the notion of many Belarusian NGOs her expulsion is directly connected to her participation at the forum in Brussels. But according to statements of her university the reason for expelling her were her bad results during her studies. Taking into account the fact, that her marks were always good, this seems to be a rather imaginary reason. Contrary, several sources (i.e. Charter97, Viasna) report of officers of the Committee of State Security (KGB) urging the director of Shaputzkas university, Mr. Ablemejka, to release her from the institution.

Many NGOs signed an open letter addressed to the administration of the Belarusian State University and to the Belarusian Ministry of Education. Therein they criticize this procedure harshly and call for public support of Tatsiana’s case by sending letters to her (via E-Mail to info mfront.net). By sending appeals the Belarusian State University and the Belarusian Ministry of Education should be urged to immediately re-matriculate Tatsiana.

Libereco supports this demand to reinstate Tatsiana Shaputska immediately and calls for sending appeals to the Belarusian authorities in Minsk and to Belaruisan embassies abroad.

Please support Tatsiana Shaputska!
