Imagine that you live in a dictatorship and that all you want is freedom. Therefore, you take part in a peaceful demonstration. Of course, since the regime prohibits all protest you are beaten and arrested.
Now, imagine that you live in a free country, and that you can speak your mind openly. It’s likely that you haven’t taken part in a demonstration for a long time. You’re so used to the ideas of freedom and of respect for human rights that you take them for granted. You learn about what happened to someone living in a dictatorship after they took to the streets and spoke their mind. You know that it’s unjust. You want to do something about it but you’re not sure where to begin.
We feel the same. That’s why we’ve decided to speak up for human rights and make a difference.
That’s why we’ve founded a new human rights organisation, Libereco – Partnership for Human Rights. Our name comes from the international auxiliary language of Esperanto, and means “freedom”. Freedom, after all, is what we’re about. We want to support people who want to express their opinion freely, protest peacefully and get involved with non-governmental organisations; to help those who are prosecuted for their religious beliefs; to stand by prisoners of conscience; to help students expelled from university for political reasons.
As people living in a free country we cannot and must not turn a blind eye to human rights abuses. We must take a stand and help the politically persecuted. Inaction is not an option. Real change is possible.
Our first country case is Belarus. We want to give encouragement to the people in Europe’s last dictatorship. That’s just the beginning though, and other countries will follow.
We want to make a stand against the violation of civil rights in nations like Belarus. To achieve this, we’re looking for fellow campaigners and supporters. Will you be a part of it? Get active at www.lphr.org
