Amnesty International: Urgent Action: Belarusian opposition leaders jailed
The organisers of a largely peaceful demonstration in Minsk, Belarus, against the rigging of elections on 19 December have been detained under suspicion of organising mass disorder. Civil Rights Defenders: Protesters beaten and arrested
After Sunday's presidential election in Belarus Vladimir Nyaklyaeu, the biggest challenger of the opposition to the dictator Alexander Lukashenko, was severely beaten on his way to a demonstration. He was taken to hospital with a concussion on Sunday night. Later that night, men stormed into his hospital room, wrapped him in a blanket and abducted Nyaklyaeu. No one has heard from him since. At least 25 journalists were arrested (see list below) during the violent crackdown on post-election protests in downtown Minsk on 19 December, or shortly thereafter, and several of them have been given sentences ranging from 10 to 15 days in prison on a charge of “participating in an unlawful demonstration.” Fifteen days in prison is the maximum penalty.
