Amnesty International: Urgent Action: Belarusian opposition leaders jailed
The organisers of a largely peaceful demonstration in Minsk, Belarus, against the rigging of elections on 19 December have been detained under suspicion of organising mass disorder. They face up to 15 years imprisonment. Among them are six of the nine opposition presidential candidates. Read more and send appeals

JEF: Activists in over a hundred cities demand a free and democratic Belarus!
On the evening of 16 December, only three nights before the already much-criticised presidential elections in Belarus, JEF (Young European Federalists) activists and partners gathered for the 6th edition of the Free Belarus Action on the squares of more than a 100 cities around the world to gag statues and protest against the Belarusian dictatorship with the slogan "Give a Voice to Democracy". Civil Rights Defenders: Protesters beaten and arrested
After Sunday's presidential election in Belarus Vladimir Nyaklyaeu, the biggest challenger of the opposition to the dictator Alexander Lukashenko, was severely beaten on his way to a demonstration. He was taken to hospital with a concussion on Sunday night. Later that night, men stormed into his hospital room, wrapped him in a blanket and abducted Nyaklyaeu. No one has heard from him since. The Belarusian authorities should immediately halt the arbitrary arrests of opposition leaders and supporters, secure the prompt release of all arbitrarily detained, and ensure the safety of those lawfully in custody, Human Rights Watch said today More

 

 

Reporters Without Borders: At least 25 journalists detained, two of them facing 15-year jail terms
At least 25 journalists were arrested (see list below) during the violent crackdown on post-election protests in downtown Minsk on 19 December, or shortly thereafter, and several of them have been given sentences ranging from 10 to 15 days in prison on a charge of “participating in an unlawful demonstration.” Fifteen days in prison is the maximum penalty.
