The NGOs Amnesty International, German-Swiss PEN Center, Reporters Without Borders, Libereco – Partnership for Human Rights, Service Civil International and ISHR organized a picket in Zurich on 19.12.2011 to demand the release of prisoners of conscience and the abolishment of death penalty in Belarus. International NGOs will organize street actions across Europe to stand up for human rights in Belarus on 19 December 2011. Joint actions by NGOs will take place in London, Zurich, Prague, Berlin, Stockholm and Amsterdam. Groups of Young European Federalists across Europe have also organised protests.

Belarusian Human Rights Defender Ales Bialiatski was sentenced to four and a half years in prison on 24 November 2011 in Minsk. We are calling for his immediate und unconditional release.

Based on informations received by Libereco 25 people are detained for political reasons in Belarus, 11 people are unlawfully convicted and have received suspended sentences, 7 people are unlawfully accused at the moment. In Mid-August 9 political prisoners were released, 4 in early September and 11 more in mid September.

Based on informations received by Libereco ca. 46 people are detained for political reasons in Belarus at the moment, 15 others are banned to leave to country. All detainees, accused and suspects are facing longtime prison sentences.
More than one hundred civil society organisations from 27 OSCE countries, including the Libereco, appealed to the OSCE on the need to take urgent measures in connection with the crisis in the Republic of Belarus.

Students in Belarus continue to be suffering from state repressions. In the case of Tatsiana Shaputska this means that she remains unable to continue her studies in Belarus.
On 27 July 2010, Aleh Surhan, activist of the Belarusian Christian Democracy Party, was released from prision. He was sentenced on February 19th 2010 to 6 months of arrest because of alleged resistance to the police.
Libereco urges the re-matriculation of Tatjana Shaputska. You are welcome to spread and send our protest cards addressed to the Belarusian minister of education.
Libereco keeps on supporting the demand to reinstate Tatsiana Shaputska immediately. After being expelled from the Belarusian State University (BSU) in December 2009 Tatsiana Shaputska has appealed against this decision. Unfortunately she was not successful in court.
47-year-old Aleh Surhan, activist of the oppositional and not yet registered Belarusian Christian Democracy party was sentenced on February 19th 2010 to 6 months of arrest and a penalty of around 625 Euros. Libereco - Partnership for Human Rights believes that Aleh Surhan is a prisoner of conscience and appeals to release him immediately and unconditionally.
