On 22 December 2020, six journalists were arrested who are members of Press Club Belarus or work with it together. Libereco demands the immediate release of the five journalists who are in prison.

Those arrested include:

    • Yulia Slutskaya, founder and chairwoman of Press Club Belarus
    • Syarhey Alsheuski, financial director of the Press Club Belarus
    • Syarhey Yakupau, director of the academy of the Press Club Belarus (expelled to Russia on 31.12.2020)
    • Alla Sharko, programme director of the Press Club Belarus
    • Pyatro Slutski, cameraman and employee of the Press Club Belarus
    • Ksenya Lutskina, member of the Opposition Coordination Council, she is involved in building an “alternative television” in cooperation with Press Club Belarus

The arrests are another attack on press freedom in Belarus aimed at intimidating independent journalists.

The homes of Alla Sharko, Syarhey Alsheuski and Siarhei Yakupau were searched by police. A police raid also took place at the office of the Press Club Belarus with a search warrant. Yulia Slutskaya was arrested on arrival at Minsk airport. She is accused of large-scale tax evasion, the other detainees are charged with aiding and abetting.

I strongly condemn the arrests and the house searches that have taken place. These current attacks on independent journalists are serious violations of the human rights to freedom of expression and freedom of the press.

I hereby call on you to release Yulia Slutskaya, Syarhey Alsheuski, Pyatro Slutski, Ksenya Lutskina and Alla Sharko immediately and unconditionally! I also call on you to guarantee the physical integrity and safety of the arrested journalists.

I expect you to ensure that the detained journalists and members of the Press Club Belarus, as well as all other citizens in Belarus, can fully and freely exercise their human rights to freedom of expression and freedom of the press, as laid down in the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus.

Immediately stop the persecution of independent media workers and political dissidents! Release all political prisoners, detained journalists and imprisoned demonstrators immediately and unconditionally!

22 декабря 2020 года были задержаны шесть журналистов и членов Пресс-клуба Беларуси: Юлия Слуцкая, Сергей Ольшевский, Сергей Якупов, Пётр Слуцкий, Ксения Луцкина и Алла Шарко.

Я категорически осуждаю их задержание и проведённые в их домах обыски. Данные атаки на независимых журналистов являются серьезным нарушением права на свободу выражения мнений и свободу прессы.

Я призываю вас немедленно и безоговорочно освободить Юлию Слуцкую, Сергея Ольшевского, Петра Слуцкого, Ксению Луцкину и Аллу Шарко! Я также призываю вас обеспечить физическую неприкосновенность и безопасность задержанных журналистов.

Я ожидаю от вас обеспечения полного и свободного осуществления права на свободу выражения мнений и свободу прессы, закрепленных в Конституции Республики Беларусь, в отношении задержанных журналистов и членов Пресс-клуба Беларуси, а также всех остальных граждан Беларуси.

Немедленно прекратите преследование сотрудников независимых СМИ и политических диссидентов! Немедленно и безоговорочно освободите всех политических заключенных, задержанных журналистов и арестованных участников демонстраций!

Hiermit fordere ich Sie dazu auf, Yulia Slutskaya, Syarhey Alsheuski, Pyatro Slutski, Ksenya Lutskina und Alla Sharko sofort und bedingungslos freizulassen! Ich fordere Sie ausserdem dazu auf, die körperliche Unversehrtheit und die Sicherheit der festgenommenen Journalisten zu garantieren.
